The Serious Effects of Smoking While Pregnant

In our society today two of the most deadly of drugs are so socially accepted that at times they can be overlooked. Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol in some circles are not even considered to be drugs, more like social habits. When you smoke you only smoke at parties or at a bar. When you drink you do the same, at the bar at parties or at certain social events, but when you are pregnant there is absolutely no excuse for using either of these extremely harmful drugs.

Not only when smoking cigarettes are you slowly but surely destroying your lungs and your overall health, but if you are pregnant your smoking can have serious effects on a developing child that has no choice but take in whatever you give them.

Smoking while pregnant is so serious that it results in 10% perinatal infant deaths. Just reading that should make you stop smoking cold turkey, but unfortunately it won't even phase some of you pregnant smokers.

Other serious effects of smoking while pregnant have been the development of learning disorders and attention deficit disorder more commonly known as ADD. These effects on a pregnancy occur during the third trimester in which it has been argued that even the baby becomes addicted to the nicotine.

Regardless of all the serious effects of smoking while being pregnant, nothing good comes from smoking and if you are a smoker and are pregnant there has never been a better time to quit your smoking habit.
